Conflict in all walks of life can be personally draining and can also be a real financial drain in a business context.

The SDI generates an understanding about what causes conflict between individuals and provides a means to overcome this. It encourages us to celebrate and work with our differences not against them.

I was introduced to the SDI a few years ago was so excited by it's simplicity and power that I invested in becoming accredited to use it with individuals and teams.

Since then I have used with almost all my coaching clients, with many many teams (& friends) - for me it is quite simply the most effective relationships coaching tool in my tool box!

What is the SDI

The SDI is based on over 30 years of research by Elias H. Porter into Relationship Awareness Theory ™.

It is highly enjoyable, interactive and visual and it provides information and understanding into the reasons people behave as they do and why they feel in tune with certain individuals and not with others - it is a development tool that helps us to understand what really makes people tick.

You complete the questionnaire by answering specific questions that look at the following two situations:

  • When things are going well and you feel good about yourself
  • When things are going wrong and you are in conflict with others

It is a learning resource with no “right” or “wrong” answers … just two positions on a unique, coloured triangle. It is easy to complete but opens up a host of opportunities to increase self-awareness, self-esteem and self-confidence.

It answers two crucial questions:

  • Why do people do what they do? sdi pic of a gropu
  • Why is this important?

Imagine one memorable picture that is easily read and understood which...

  • Provides what motivates every member of your team
  • Shows the triggers that will get them into conflict, how to avoid this happening, and...
  • Identify and deliver the most productive response to maintain the original focus

Coaching with the SDI

A series of face-to-face coaching sessions can follow, that explores a range of different issues. The focus is on establishing general areas for performance improvement and specific goals and outcomes for each coaching session and a range of techniques and methods are used.

What the SDI gives us is a starting point to look at individual motives and how this might impact on the behaviour of each member in the group. This creates a non-threatening approach to discussing areas of conflict and how to get over them.

What is the SDI used for?

As a relationship building tool the SDI is used in a great variety of settings with a number of different groups of people - sometimes across the entire organisation and it almost becomes like a new language for relationships!
